Having been turned down by his son Gabriel, Death sends out demons to find his other half-mortal children here on Earth. At the same time, the different religious leaders have banded together to form a unified, sovereign army to stop Satan. At the end of this issue it appears one side is much closer to victory, but who's really pulling the strings?

A story of good versus evil in a Vertigo-esque vein. Death has aligned himself with Satan and is claiming more 'evil' souls than 'good' in an attempt to build Satan's army faster than that of God's. Satan has promised Death a position of power within his ranks, which means Death must find a protege to take over his role in the machinations of the universe. His first choice, his son Gabriel, has turned him down and denounced his father, forcing Death to seek out his other half-mortal children here on Earth.
