ARTISTS WANTED!
Yes, LSS is always interested in talking to hopeful artists looking to get into the comic book business. As a small studio we can not always offer monetary dispensation for work, but we will get your work as much exposure as is humanly possible. We are hitting the convention scene right now and are looking to expand those endeavors in the future. At appearances we will get our books into as many hands as we can; fans, publishers, and industry pros alike. If you do work for us and can find your way to conventions we appear at, we will do our best to get you a guest pass so you can hang at the LSS table signing autographs and helping to shill our books. We strive to be fair and very easy to work with.
Please bear in mind how difficult it is to get into this business and understand you have to earn your chops. You may indeed be the next big superstar artist, but until you've proven yourself, the big publishers don't want to risk blown deadlines and rushed work. I don't say these things to be rude, just to make sure you really want this and understand what it takes to get there. We've met potential artists at cons and on message boards who really want to work with us then tell us "I get $200 a page." No, you want $200 a page, but no one's paying you that, so you aren't working at all and no one's seeing your work. If you want Marvel wages, go to Marvel. Good luck and God bless! If you want to get your work out there and show potential employers that, YES, you can do an entire issue of sequentials; drop us a line. Ask Jim Lee the best way to break into this biz and he'll tell you: WORK WORK WORK! Show publishers your abilities and drive. Show them you can do the job, by doing the job. Look at all the big name guys, then look where they got their start. Sorry to sound harsh, but I have hear one too many "next Michael Turners" tell me they "can't afford to work with us." I guess inflated ego's are more cost effective than hard work and sweat.
So, as I step down from my soapbox and look around to see it anyone is still listening... Yeah? Couple of ya still there? Good. Look at the positions below and let us know if you're interested. Thanks, the 'Slingers.
PENCILLERS: We currently have a few stories that need illustrated. Everything from humorous (ie: crass) super hero talking heads story to a bloody, demon-infested Halloween story to a super hero buddy story. Our approach will be to tell all different types of tales, and try to have something for everyone. If you can ink your own work or have an inker you like to work with, great. If not, no problem, we'll scout around and find a suitable inker for you.
INKERS: We can always find a job for a good inker, and it's always nice to have a few in the old rolodex should the need arise (read above: PENCILLERS) If you look at our "STORIES" page, you'll see that we plan on telling all different types of tales, so we will need both pencillers and inkers of different styles.
COLORISTS: Currently all our books are done in grayscale, so someone skilled in this area would be immediately useful. That is not to say that we won't be printing in color in the near future. If we get picked up by a publisher (and probably even if we don't) we do plan on going full color within the next year or so. Let's face it, fans want color. Even on the creative side, we want color - but colorists don't usually come cheap and the printing cost shoots up when you go to color, so... We wait, but know it's only a matter of time.
LETTERS: We have a few letterers we've worked with and we are extremely pleased with their work, but should their schedule not jive with ours, we need a back-up plan. After working with a few different letterers, I have acquired a whole new love and appreciation for truly well done letterers (well, that and since I tried to letter myself on Illustrator. Thanks, but no thanks.) and even have taken to having poor lettering be something that can ruin the enjoyment of a comic for me.
Who did I miss? You? Got some skills I missed on this brief employment section? Want to do a pin-up or cover? Are you the next Alex Ross? You just got some mad skill the comics world hasn't seen yet? Drop us a line. We'll see if we've got something for you.
Shoot us a letter or some files to the addy below (e-mail us if you need a snail mail address to send copies to) and we'll gladly take a look at your stuff. If you're at a convention we are appearing at, please feel free to bring your portfolio over and we'll pull you aside to check it out. We are creators, but we are first and foremost FANS.
